It happened. AI is finally in everything. There’s a toothbrush called Dyson CameraJet. No, it’s not a camera with a jet engine (that would be awesome, though). It’s an electric toothbrush that combines a live-streaming micro-camera, AI, and fluid dynamics to floss as you brush.
Dyson spent six years developing the CameraJet to address a common dental problem. Their research found that most people skip flossing and brush for only 45 seconds, well below the recommended two minutes. Plaque in hard-to-reach areas can lead to gum irritation, tooth decay, and other health issues.
Flossing is often seen as an awkward and time-consuming chore, which leads many people to skip it despite knowing its importance. The CameraJet makes flossing easier by combining it with brushing. The water flossing is not cyclical. It uses machine learning algorithms and a camera to detect gaps between teeth. Once it does, it uses water to floss between teeth. It’s a high-tech approach and could possibly be a game changer for oral care.
Gap Optical Targeting and Conical Jets
The CameraJet uses Gap Optical Targeting technology, with a 100k-pixel macro lens camera inside the brush head that captures 28 frames per second. An AI algorithm, trained on over 470,000 dental images, identifies and tracks the gaps between your teeth in real time.
When the CameraJet detects a gap, it releases a burst of mouthwash within 100 milliseconds. Instead of a sharp, needle-like stream like most water flossers, it uses a wider conical jet. This approach clears plaque more effectively at a lower pressure, which is gentler on gums and enamel.
Dyson CameraJet Engineers the Perfect Brush
The CameraJet has a 12.5ml mouthwash tank built into the handle. A diaphragm pump keeps fluid pressure steady no matter how you hold the brush, avoiding the air-pocket issues found in gravity-fed designs.
The brush head uses a contoured, dual-bristle design and includes an RFID tag to notify you when it needs replacing. Dyson also added Variable Sonic Oscillation to prevent the bristles from stalling in tight spots.
A Complete Dyson CameraJet Connected Ecosystem
Traditional foaming toothpaste interferes with the CameraJet’s camera, so Dyson has a non-foaming toothpaste without SLS and a low-foaming mouthrinse. Flavors include Ginger Mint, Spearmint, and Peppermint Sensitive. So the usual toothpaste won’t work well with the CameraJet.
The brush connects to the MyDyson app over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Users can see a live feed from the camera, check coverage maps, and get brushing feedback. The camera works only during use, and it does not store or upload images. That’s really great. We wouldn’t want videos of our crooked teeth shown all over social media.
