Game devs launch Steam titles; DOST funds ultrasound training models; data centers grow; Vivo debuts rugged phone; TECNO launches a new photo contest.
Local Gaming & Game Dev Scene
Filipino indie game developers have been making waves lately, and there’s plenty to get excited about.
- Relic Abyss just launched in early access, bringing a fresh JRPG roguelite experience from local studio Reverse Loop. The game mixes bullet-hell action with RPG mechanics, letting you take on adorable but creepy cosmic monsters. It’s got a Lovecraftian vibe that we’re definitely into. This is Reverse Loop’s first bullet-heaven roguelite, and it’s already on our must-play list.

- While Relic Abyss looks like it’s going to be a massive hit for bullet-hell game fans, Filipino developer Keneth Agar and his indie game development studio, Silent Studios, have been churning out horror games consistently. Recently, they’ve hit a major milestone: successfully releasing eight games on Steam. But they’ve been releasing horror titles continuously over the years, and they won’t be stopping anytime soon.

- Ateneo de Manila University’s Virtual, Augmented, and Mixed Reality (VAMR) Laboratory, in collaboration with the Ateneo Martial Law Museum and Library, developed a virtual reality escape room called Heritage Hero: Secrets of the “Golden Era.” It highlights the sad and terrible aspects of the Martial Law years under President Ferdinand Marcos. While this is more of an educational tool, it has a gamefied point-and-click interface that lets you progress through the game.

Tech Infrastructure & Innovation
There’s also plenty happening in tech infrastructure and research.
- The Department of Science and Technology is funding a ₱4.99-million project at UP Manila to create local ultrasound training models for OB-GYN clinicians. These practice models use tissue-like materials to mimic muscle, fat, skin, and tumors, offering a practical, affordable alternative to imported versions. The team plans to finish the prototype by August 2026 and start small-batch production, making hands-on training more accessible for clinicians nationwide.

- The Philippines is quickly becoming a hotspot for data center operators, with the country being eyed as a future hub for cloud and AI infrastructure. A recent Nexdigm article even suggests the local AI industry could be worth $150 billion by 2030. Still, with all this growth, we’re hoping the environmental impact won’t be too heavy for local communities.

Gadgets & Contests
- Vivo just launched the Y31d in the Philippines, targeting motorcycle riders and delivery partners who need a tough, reliable phone. The Y31d stands out for its big battery, rugged build, and wallet-friendly price. It packs a 6.75-inch 120Hz display, a Snapdragon 6s Gen 2 chip, a 50MP rear camera, and water- and dust-resistance (IP68/IP69).

- TECNO and Lonely Planet have teamed up for the Shot On CAMON Contest 2026, a mobile photography competition running in the Philippines from May to October. There are five categories to join, including portraits, culture, AI-assisted shots, snapshots, and night shots.
