DJI Romo 2 Series Robot Vacuum Cleaner

Here’s news that you don’t hear often: A drone tech company is going into robot vacuum cleaners, using its drone sensor technology. We ask: why not? It makes perfect sense.  DJI is bringing its drone sensor technology to the smart home with the new ROMO 2 series robot vacuum cleaner. The ROMO P2 and ROMO A2 combine proven aerial sensors with practical hardware to tackle common robotic floor-cleaning problems.

Drone-Grade Perception Meets Real-World Obstacles

At the core of the ROMO 2 is a spatial sensing system based on DJI’s drone technology. Instead of just bumpers or simple cameras, the ROMO 2 uses sensors that spot obstacles as thin as 2 mm. It can detect and avoid things like charging cables, shoelaces, pet pads, and even glass doors or floor mirrors.

The vacuum uses AI to learn the layout of your home and improve its cleaning routes over time. A built-in light on the bottom helps it spot dust on hard floors, even in low light, without bothering pets or people.

Mechanical Muscle: Robotic Arms and Dynamic Legs

Earlier robot vacuums struggled with cleaning edges and moving between rooms. The ROMO 2 addresses these issues with new hardware features:

  • LiDAR-Guided Adaptive Robotic Arm: The mop uses a swing arm that covers a 123-degree range. It can reach 7.8 cm further to the side and 4.5 cm deeper under furniture, cleaning close to edges without marking walls.
  • 36,000 Pa Suction System: The new model increases suction from 25,000 Pa to 36,000 Pa. An active pressure plate helps the vacuum pull dirt from deep in carpets in one pass.
  • Active Mechatronic Legs: Motorized lifts help the robot cross door thresholds up to 4 cm high and multi-level steps up to 8.5 cm.
  • Spill Discrimination: The robot uses computer vision to distinguish liquid spills from dry debris. It sends the mop arm to clean up liquids and avoids spreading water onto dry rugs
  • 365 days of maintenance-free operation:  The dock cleans mop pads with high-pressure water jets against a nanocrystalline washboard, then evacuates the water through a 16 mm waste port to prevent clogging and sludge buildup. Through 32 acoustic-dampening materials and muffler baffles, quiet mopping cycles register at just 38 dBA. With 55W fast charging, the onboard battery tops up in roughly 2.5 hours.
