Seeing an e-bike or electric scooter was akin to seeing unicorns. Now, e-bikes are a common sight, offering a practical and eco-friendly way to get around. But for cyclists who want to keep their current bike, switching to electric often means giving up a well-loved ride. ASUS, known for its laptops and PC hardware, is now entering the micro-mobility space with the Oxiis Intelligent Bike Booster. This friction-drive motor system is built to convert most standard bicycles into e-bikes, without the need to buy a new one.
A Minimalist, Friction-Drive Approach
The ASUS Oxiis E250G1 is a friction-drive unit that attaches to the seat post and powers the rear tire. It weighs 3.7 kilograms with the battery and uses an aluminum build. The design is minimalist and aims to fit most bikes without major changes to gears or brakes.
The Oxiis motor is rated for 250W of continuous power and can reach 500W at peak. It uses Adaptive Boost Technology to detect road gradients and adjust assistance automatically. Depending on local rules, the top speed is 32 km/h, or 25 km/h where required.
The system uses a 158.4 Wh removable battery that supports 100W USB-C PD fast charging. It can recharge in about two hours. The battery is approved for carry-on air travel. Range is up to 50 kilometers in Eco mode, or about 10 kilometers in Sport mode.
Smart Features of Asus e-bike booster
ASUS includes several smart features. The booster works with a wireless cadence sensor for a cable-free setup and has a brake-detecting taillight for safety. Riders can switch between Eco, Normal, and Sport assist modes using a button on the unit or the ASUS Oxiis app for iOS and Android.
Oxiis fits tire sizes from 16 to 29 inches, including 700C, and tire widths up to 60 mm. It supports seat posts from 25.4 to 34.9 mm. The system works with city, road, gravel, folding, and hardtail mountain bikes. It is not compatible with full-suspension frames, heavy knobby tires, or carbon fiber seat posts.
ASUS is now offering a modular alternative to buying a new e-bike. The Oxiis Intelligent Bike Booster lets commuters and casual riders add electric power to their existing bikes. For many, a bolt-on upgrade could be all it takes to join the e-bike trend.
