Samsung is sticking with its foldable phones, but other companies churning out foldables have seen that sticking with just one form factor isn’t innovative enough. You have to change it up. With the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra, Samsung is finally offering more than one aspect ratio.
The “Wide” vs. “Ultra” Paradigm
The main change isn’t just better specs. The standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 now has a wider, passport-style design. Its 5.5-inch cover screen uses a 10:16 aspect ratio, which addresses the cramped typing of earlier models. Open it up, and you get a 7.6-inch display with a 4:3 ratio. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra keeps the taller profile seen in previous models. It has an 8.0-inch inner display and a 6.5-inch cover screen, building on the Z Fold 7. Both models use Samsung’s new Flex Titanium hinge, which makes them thinner. The standard Fold 8 is 4.5mm thick when unfolded. The hinge also helps reduce the crease and lets the display open smoothly.
Power and Proactive AI in foldable phones
Both devices use the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy chipset. Hardware is only part of the story, though. Samsung is also pushing its Galaxy AI features.
Samsung’s AI features are designed to be proactive. Now Brief looks at your routines to show relevant information, while Gemini Intelligence helps manage workflows across over 40 apps. For users juggling projects or content, you can drag and drop files in Split view and have Gemini generate meeting recaps, summaries, or reports automatically.
Cameras and Entertainment
Both foldable phones are built for content creation. The standard Z Fold 8 has a 50MP main sensor and a 50MP ultrawide lens, so you get consistent image quality for both regular photos and wide shots.
The different aspect ratios affect entertainment use. The wider Z Fold 8 is good for side-by-side apps and gaming, but 16:9 videos will have black bars. The Z Fold 8 Ultra, with its taller screen, is a bit better for watching movies, though it stays narrower when folded.
With the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series, Samsung is broadening what foldable phones can offer. By providing two shapes, users can pick a device that fits their workflow instead of adjusting to the phone.
