Flashforge has launched the CJ270, a desktop full-color 3D printer that uses Multi Jet Printing (MJP) technology and a built-in planarizer to maintain consistent layer thickness. The compact printer targets users who need accurate color reproduction and reliable surface quality for creative and professional work.

Overview of 3D printing Technologies

3D printing technologies differ in how they produce color and build physical models.

Multicolor fused deposition modeling (FDM) builds objects layer by layer with thermoplastic filaments. Switching filaments allows for multiple colors, but subtle gradients and complex graphics are harder to achieve.

Binder jetting uses liquid binding agents on powder materials. Some systems add color during printing, but models often need extra post-processing.

Digital light processing (DLP) cures liquid photopolymer resin with projected light. It produces fine details, but single-resin systems have limited color options.

Material jetting deposits small droplets of photopolymer and cures them with UV light. Using multiple materials, these systems can print detailed colors, gradients, and visual effects in one build.

Why 3D Printer Layer Thickness and Consistency Matter

In material jetting, accurate droplet placement is just one factor. Each layer also needs a uniform surface, since small variations can add up and affect quality and consistency.

Before UV curing, the planarizer levels each uncured layer. This reduces surface variations, which is especially useful for curved or complex models.

Thinner layers can improve detail and surface smoothness.  But printing accuracy also depends on droplet placement, material properties, UV curing, and mechanical control.

How the Flashforge CJ270 3D Printer Applies Material Jetting

The CJ270 prints with layers as thin as 7 microns and uses a built-in planarizing roller to keep layer thickness consistent. This helps improve detail and surface quality.

The printer uses cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (CMYK). It can also produce white and transparent materials, producing over 10 million colors.

Water-soluble support material makes post-processing easier. Supports can be removed from overhangs, recessed areas, and complex shapes with less effort.

The 3D printer measures 697 × 410 × 405 mm and costs $3,999 in the US. Its compact size makes full-color material jetting accessible for design tos, educators, and small businesses working with detailed models.

Beyond Color Range

Color range is just one factor in choosing a full-color 3D printer. Surface quality, layer consistency, post-processing, and cost matter too, especially for smaller studios and businesses.

The CJ270 addresses these needs with a desktop approach to full-color printing. It balances visual detail with practical requirements for making physical models.
